Tuning

Why do
pianos need to be tuned?
All pianos require tuning on a regular basis. This is because the wooden
components of the piano are affected by seasonal changes.
In summer when the temperature and humidity is high, the pitch of the
piano can rise and likewise in winter when the humidity is low the pitch
can drop. The pitch will tend to drop more than the amount it is raised
so a piano that is never tuned will gradually sound flatter.
Therefore it is recommended that in domestic situations a piano should
be tuned at least twice a year. A professional or a serious student may
need it tuned more often if the piano is given a daily workout.
Brand new pianos should be tuned more frequently (3-4 tunings in its
first year and at least 2 annual tunings after that). This is because
the strings stretch and settle, causing the pitch to drop.
The more frequently a piano is tuned the more stable it will remain.
